Francis MarianiHow to exclude column from printing when using PRINT *
I seem to have forgotten how to do this or have forgotten if this is possible, but I'd like to exclude a column from reporting when doing PRINT *. I thought blanking out the field name or alias name in the master would do the trick, but no.
I have a flat file with FILLER fields that I don't want when I do PRINT *.
Thanks,
Francis

GinnyJakesDid you blank out both alias and fieldname (though not sure you can do that)?
Otherwise, I think you have to explicitly name the columns you want to print.

Francis MarianiI tried blanking out both name and alias, no luck.
I added TITLE='' so the field prints with a blank title - better than 'FILL1'.
Thanks,
Francis

jncIf it true flat file, meaning fixed width, you could change the actual of the field previous to the one you don't want to display.
Say that the previous field is useage A10, and the field you want to skip over is A5, then change the ACTUAL to A15 for the previous field.

susannahfrankiemartini,
here's a utility i wrote to do this sort of thing, reading a file called &myfilename:
FILEDEF MYLIST DISK MYLIST.FTM
CHECK FILE &myfilename HOLD
TABLE FILE HOLD PRINT FIELDNAME
IF FIELDNAME NE 'FILL' OR 'DUMMY'
ON TABLE HOLD AS MYLIST FORMAT ALPHA {sure, you could SAVE}
END
-RUN
-SET &HOWMANY = &LINES ;
TABLE FILE &myfilename
PRINT
-REPEAT end.loop &HOWMANY TIMES
-READ MYLIST NOCLOSE &FIELD.A66
&FIELD
-end.loop
ON TABLE HOLD {if you want}
END
-RUN
-CLOSE MYLIST {in case you want to loop again}
