Is there any way to get around the 4k (4096 character) limit on a temporary (define/compute) field? In order to create variable length records (without trailing spaces) we are using/printing only one field. The problem that we are having is that the field is dynamic and can get very large, often times reaching far beyond 4096 characters. I have read where the TAB format supports record sizes up to 32k, however, I don't understand why you couldn't make that entire record 1 field.

My guess is that there's a 32K limit for the total length of all the fields in the HOLD file.
This works - you can see a field of length A32684 being created. If I add another field, I would have to reduce the length of the computed field.
TABLE FILE CAR PRINT COMPUTE TEST2/A32684 = MODEL || CAR; END
Perhaps we can help you find another method for what you are attempting to do.
