Could you please explain me the architecture of WebFOCUS. I see there are various components involved like Wb Server, WebFOCUS Client, Application server, Reporting server etc. And in the help documents it is also said that application server is optional. Why is this optional? Also could anybody tell me on which server what installation needs to be done? Like Managed reporting part will be intalled on which server etc...
The version i am using is 7.6.1 on Windows system.
Thanking You, Regards, VidyaThis message has been edited. Last edited by: Kerry,
Apart from the various install and config documents (which are a great help in understanding the architecture), there is a so-called 'best practices' documents that describes the various parts of the webfocus environemnts on a somewhat higher level. You can find it here. It deals with migration issues and is meant for release 5.3, but the general information in it is still quite valid. You'll need to be logged on to the ibi site to be able to download the doc.

Vidya, The documents suggested are great. What you have to consider once you have a better understanding of all the components, are what your requirements are for each of these components. Depending on the number of users, the type of reporting requests you expect your server to receive, and how frequent these requests will be: You might want to consider a multi-tier architecture (assuming that your hardware assets allow for this). That is to say:
1 Your Web server (IIS or Apache) may be on a dedicated server. 2 Your Application server ((ISAPI - normaly close to IIS) or TOMCAT) may be on another server. 3 Your WebFOCUS Reporting server may be on a dedicated server. 4 Your ReportCaster server may be on yet another server. 5 etc. etc. etc.
Consider your current and future requirements, map them out on paper. Then draw-up your IP (Installation/Implementation Plan), compare with aforementioned guidelines. Discuss with responsible people (Web / DB / Network Administrators etc.).
Like we say in SCUBA diving circles, "PLAN YOUR DIVE AND DIVE YOUR PLAN".
