I found some old code from mainframe days where I converted an alpha field to a date in a define area of the code:

ADMND/I6MDY = EDIT(ADM_DT);
ADMNDM/MDY = ADMND;
ADMNDY/YMD = ADMNDM;

Then you could say
ADMNEW/YYMD = ADMNDM;

IN this case AMNND would be your adddate field. Of course there may be better ways.

Try using the DATECVT function.

NEWDT/YYMD=DATECVT(OLDDT,'I6YMD','YYMD');
OR
NEWDT/I8YYMD=DATECVT(OLDDT,'I6YMD','I8YYMD');

When the conversion is performed, a legacy date obeys any DEFCENT and YRTHRESH parameter settings supplied for that field.
