Hi All,

Can anyone please elaborate the difference between App folder and Content folder and Domain.
I have read the technical library documents of 8.1.05 and have understanding now of the APP folder but could not find the difference between these structures and their significance and how they exist in relation to the other.
For the context, we are starting a new reporting project which will use same database objects used by existing reporting projects. So, from WF perspective, what basic structural components (App Folder, Content Folder, Domain) should I start creating and why as part of following best practices? Thank you in Advance!

App Folders are on your Reporting Server and you maintain the metadata there.

Domains and Content folders are stored in the WebFOCUS Repository and that's where all the Reports, Charts and documents will reside. Users interact with Dashboards, reports, charts and ultimately Portals through the Domain. The domain is also tightly integrated with the new 8.x Security model. Consequently, when you want your users to have access to different assets, you assign their access rights through the Domain security.

I must say I am bit confused here because below is the text I see from the Technical documentation from IB about App folders. As per this, it seems it holds fex files, mdf files etc.

"An application is a platform-independent repository for a group of related components, such as procedures, Master and Access Files, data files, HTML files, PDF files, and image files. It provides an area on the server that both confers a unique identity on the application components and facilitates the sharing of components across applications in an organized manner."

Also, if App folder holds metadata of an installed Web focus, then should we have just one app folder for an installation? But I recall seeing in one the installation of a different team, having multiple app folders.

App folders CAN also hold fex files but 8.x release is moving away from that architecture and encouraging interactive content accessed by users to be stored in the repository. An example of a fex that might not have to be in the repository is one that creates a HOLD file for use by others. Data Cleansing and/or Quick Copy jobs could also reside on the App folder.

You can also create a whole WebFOCUS application with one App Folder. However, putting all your metadata in one App Folder will make it more difficult to segregate your users. Suppose you want to have a Sales folder and an HR folder and the users of each aren't allowed to see the other's metadata. In that case, having the metadata segregated in two App Folders would make your life a lot easier.

The Content Folders, one or many, reside in the Domains. Security can be applied to the domains and can apply to all Content folder therein. The Content Folders can have further restricting security applied as well. Security can also be applied to the App Folders as well as the metadata (Synonyms). The security options are (almost) limitless...
