There are lots of reports I don't like to do as well.
There's a whole WebFOCUS manual on the subject of using FML called "Creating Financial Reports." It has lots of examples. That's probably where you should start.

However, creating a report with separate columns for Assets, Liabilities, and Capital accounts has more to do with defining columns properly than using FML. FML is usually for row-based manipulation of data using hierarchies.

we have created many reports with FML. it is a very flexible way of reporting, like an excel spreadsheet.
You mention a few subject and as far as I can see it are all balance related posts. The start in this is however to have or create a good, logical hierarchy based on your General Ledger. Once you have that you can rather easy create your reports.
