Hello:

I'm looking for basic information on Compute Field syntax. Things like how to add comments and how to group expressions.

I'm not finding much in the way of documentation, so I'm picking my way through forums.

I would appreciate it if anybody could point me to a resource if one exists.

Is there a way to add comments to Calculated Value code? I've got some fairly complex stuff going on and comments would come in handy when I take a look at it again in the future.

You can add comments before the COMPUTE statement. Comments begin with -*
Note: Comments should always start in a new line, you can not add comments in the same line as COMPUTE statement.

You can also create COMPUTEs in Master Files and there you can specify description for COMPUTEs.

So just to be clear, the only place I can add comments to a COMPUTE field is at the top? No embedded comments?

I don't have the ability to edit Master Files.

You can sprinkle comments throughout your code - as long as you don't plan to ever open it again with the report painter. If you do, it will move all the comments to the top.

I don't think I can put comments just anywhere in my Compute field code. When I put them anywhere but the top I get an error.
