If a field with a null value is retrieved, the field value is not used in aggregating calculations such as averaging and summing. If the report calls for the field's value to display, a special character appears to indicate a missing value. The default character is a period (.), but you can change it to any character string you wish using the SET NODATA command, as described in the doc

What kind of data base are you reporting from. For example our dates in DB2 are all defined as 'NOT NULL' so they have a default date in them, which for DB2 I believe is 0001-01-01, our software vendor changes them all to 1001-01-01.
