A flat file is restricted only by the OS
A XFOCUS DB has a 16 GIG limit (at extra cost)

However using focsort for sorting still has a 2 gig limit.

Don't forget LOCATION and PARTITIONING. The 2GB limit is for a segment in a FOCUS db. Using LOCATION for different segments or Intelligent Partitioning (all discussed recently) can up the actual file size considerably.

It it not MF only, see the describing data manual.

All features of Partitions, MDI and External Index as well as Location are available in all flavours of WebFOCUS, back to 7.1 I believe or earlier. There were some problems in earlier 7.6 releases I remember, but 7.6.11 works well.

The FOCUS db is very powerful now for data mart solutions. Partitions and Locations for size, external index for JOIN, MDI for fast access. Add FML hierarchy and dimensions for OLAP, and you get a really good tool.

Thanks for the replies,

works after eliminating the stumbling blocks:
1) Don't use hyphens with the DATANAME
2) USE the $ sign as closing sign fo the acx file
