I am having some trouble getting the chaining feature to work on my html page. I keep getting an error that says there appears to be an issue chaining listbox1 to listbox2. Please check the procedures and Resolve parameter values. I have read the article written by Barry Soloman and understand that the parameters must match in both the procedure and resolve to, but I am still receiving this error. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you overcome it?

I am using AppStudio for the chaining part of the html, however the fex was written in DevStudio. I followed the directions outlined in Barry Solomans article, but I must confess I have very little experience in both AppStudio and the GUI. I would be happy to post the code. Specifically I would like College, Degree and Major chained so degree will filter based on college selection and major will filter based on Degree selection. There are 4 graphs on this html page that all have the same parameters.

So, you've got code for a graph made within the tool, and tool generated HTML that shows me you have College, Major, and Degree as selection or drop-down list boxes. What I do to populate my controls when needing to chain them using AppStudio is create each list for each control separately with it set to output both the return and display value pairs in XML. Each successive request including the previous level's parameter as a WHERE clause.

So, for example, if your first top-level list is College you don't need any WHERE clauses in that due to it being the top-level in the chain. The next one is Degree so for that request you would have a WHERE clause for College. Likewise, in Major you'd have 2 WHERE clauses for both College and Degree.

After you get your "external requests" created and test that they return what you are wanting, you can then add them in the Requests and Data Sources panel in the HTML Canvas tool of your HTML page. Then, they are available for you to tie to each of your drop-down list boxes. Which you simply click the control you want to tie a request to and under the Settings panel set it up with the correct return and display values from that request. After that, you use the Parameters tab near the bottom to drag each control in the chain to each successive control therein. Shouldn't be much more than that.

I've had issues trying to chain existing controls that already were linked to parameters before. I suggest starting by creating the controls and use the Parameters tab in App Studio to link them. Once you do that you can populate them and link them to parameters.

Is the data source you use to populate the controls the same for all the controls? From my experience chaining works best when the data source for all the controls you want to chain is the same.

If the data you need for the controls you want to chain comes from different tables, you should create a fex that joins those tables and has the data you want to use to populate the controls.

Once you created the fex, add it to the list of requests for the HTML page. From there, you can use it to populate the controls and pass the values as parameters.
