Can you also give us a little more detail on what you are trying to do here.

Why not declare the variable first and hold it AS that name?

-SET &HOLDFILE = 'CARHOLD';

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT COUNTRY
ON TABLE HOLD AS &HOLDFILE
END


PROD:WebFOCUS 7.6.11 on UNIX accessing FOCUS, Oracle, SQLServer
TEST: WebFOCUS 7.7.1 on UNIX accessing FOCUS, Oracle, SQLServer

If you have multiple rows in the hold file, you can put the -READ in a -REPEAT loop like this .

-REPEAT LOOP99 WHILE &IORETURN EQ 0;
-SET &ICNT = &ICNT + 1 ;
-SET &FLD1.&ICNT = &F1X ;
-SET &FLD2.&ICNT = &F2X ;
-SET &FLD3.&ICNT = &F3X ;
-READ HSAVE &......
-LOOP99
-*
