Hi,

How do I specify in my parameter list that the function takes in a variable length string?

I'm trying to do something like this...
DEFINE FUNCTION REPLACE (INLEN/I5, INSTR/A(INLEN.EVAL))
....
END

Thanks.

Hi Daniel,

Have you tried -

Hi Tony,

Doesn't INSTR/A50V constrict the length of the string to 50 characters?
I don't know how long my string will be... can I somehow specify the length of the string at runtime? or to just specify that the parameter is of type string with an undetermined length?

Thanks.

-Daniel.,

Hi Daniel,

You should be able to use anything in the A50V upto the maximum length permissible within WebFOCUS. I only used 50 because I cba to type more Smiler

Note: I haven't tried using variable length fields in a function so it may not even be possible Roll Eyes.

The only other thing I would try is using amper variables. However, I think that you would have to reload the function each time in case the variable value changed. That defeats the object of a variable value though Red Face.

Keep the Forum posted if you manage to get it working.

dtrang,
try using either ARGLEN function
or just the dos attribute &MYVAR.LENGTH
to see how long the inbound is.
say you measure a variable &INLEN
then you can format a variable MYVAR/A&INLEN
I read inbound character strings and have to surround them in quotes, and the || doesn't do it, so i use this technique often.
-SET &AL1 = ARGLEN(25,&HDCUST1,'I2');
-SET &AL2='A'|&AL1;
-SET &HDCUST1 = TRIM('T',&HDCUST1,25,' ',1,'&AL2');
