Just wondering whether anyone has attempted to explain what COMPUTE does to a "layperson".
While I understand what a COMPUTE does and when to use it, I find myself having to explain COMPUTE by example rather than a simple statement. The manual's definition is good (ie what is the difference between a DEFINE and a COMPUTE), but it is still a little daunting for some.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

A define is performed on each record as it is input to the TABLE request. The compute is performed after the TABLE request processes the selection criteria and any sorting, you can do a compute without sorting; the computed field is part of the output of the TABLE request, a defined field is only present in the ouput if included in the SUM/PRINT/WRITE variable list.
