Here's the code I have:
DEFINE FILE IWTA_RECORDS
REQ_NAME/A130=J11LAST_NM | ', ' | J11FIRST_NM;
PERF_NAME/A130=J12LAST_NM | ', ' | J12FIRST_NM;
END

What I want to print is Lastname, Firstname

What is printing is Lastname,Firstname without the space after the comma.

Any suggestions?>

thanks,
carl

quote:
REQ_NAME/A130=J11LAST_NM | ', ' | J11FIRST_NM

S/B:

REQ_NAME/A130=J11LAST_NM || (', ' | J11FIRST_NM);

Single quote, then comma, then space, then single quote within paranthesis...

Thanks. This worked.

Can you explain to me when you're supposed to use one | and when to use 2 ||? It's very confusing to me.

thanks,
carl

The single concat bar, |, does a soft concatenation; example:

LASTNAME is A20 equal to Smith
FIRSTNAME is A20 equal to Fred

Soft concat:

FULLNAME/A40 = LASTNAME | FIRSTNAME will produce:

Smith               Fred

Trailing spaces for LASTNAME remain...

Hard Concat:

FULLNAME/A40 = LASTNAME || FIRSTNAME will produce:

SmithFred

Trailing spaces for LASTNAME removed...

Hope this helps, got it out of the manual...

Thanks. I had looked at the manual, but it only confused me. Your example is much better.
