I'm wondering if anyone can confirm/answer some questionis about a hold file for me:

1) it's a physical file of a report output. We use it to improve performance. Currently I have a dataset after some joining/filtering, then I will use it in several reports, is it a good idea to save it as a hold file?

2) How to save the result dataset as a hold file? Do I need to create the synonyms for the file?

Unless you take special measures, HOLD files are stored in the temporary working folder for your session and are scratched as soon as the your session ends. There are a couple of ways to retain a HOLD file (both data and master) so it can be used after your current session has ended. Use of FOCCACHE (ON TABLE HOLD AS FOCCACHE/< hold name>) to store your HOLD file will retain it for the duration of the FOCCACHE time limit (the default is 90 minutes, I believe). Use of the command APP HOLD < folder name> will permanently save your HOLD file in the specified APP folder.

Master descriptions/synonyms are automatically generated whenever you create a HOLD file. Both data file and master/synonym for a HOLD file are stored in the same location unless you use something like the APP HOLDDATA and APP HOLDMETA commmands to store them in separate folders.
