Hi all
Even though I know that WP is an unstyled format, is it actually possible to do some basic styling with the output?
For example, the numeric fields on WP format output are right aligned. Is there a way I can make these as left aligned and still have the format as a WP/text file ?

Unstyled means just that - no styling. The only way you can get what you want is to convert the format of the fields in the report to something that will left align - Try the FTOA function.

Darin - I did try converting the format and it works. Thanks for the suggestion.
I was just being too hopeful about some kind of manipulation of WP format. But I guess, I'll have to live with what we have - the un-styled format.

Would still wait for other suggestions - I may find some interesting trick !

The basic alignments are: alpha = left, numberic = right. So, I'd be interested to know what's better then Darin's Good FTOA for this solution? Big Grin

By the way, what about center aligning a column - if that is a requirement ?

If you're needing center alignment of a column, then WP output is probalby not the correct output to be using. That being said, the story is the same. There is no styling, so you have to create the field value exactly as you want it to appear. You would probably need to test the string length, subtract that from the total length of the column, divide by two (rounding down) and then insert that many spaces at the beginning of the string using EDIT.

True - I can't agree any more.
I will try to analyze the possibility, from a business standpoint, of using some other report format. If there is a pressed need to have the report in doc/txt format, I'll have to use some string manipulation techniques, similar to the one suggested by you.

If you are using alpha fields, then you can justify right, left or center, by using a function. If you have to justify numeric fields, consider converting to alpha. See the following:
  
DEFINE FILE CAR
CMODEL/A24=CTRFLD(MODEL, 24, 'A24');
END

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT CMODEL/C
BY COUNTRY BY CAR
ON TABLE HOLD AS SYED FORMAT WP
END

Use an editor to view the SYED.WP file which doesn't squeeze blanks...
