[SOLVED] Replacing the 'null' period with blank space -- why isn't this working?

This is a PDF report. One of my database fields is either null or contains data depending on the record pulled. In the event the field is null, I want to replace the "." that displays in the report. To do that, I just wrote something up in the define:

DERIVED_FROM/A40 = IF DERIVED_FROM IS MISSING THEN '' ELSE DERIVED_FROM;

Yet it still shows the period. Odd thing is this code works for other fields just fine. I've checked and the derived_from column contains null values, not blanks spaces or odd characters. DERIVED_FROM is not defined more than once. I've tried EQ ' ' instead of 'IS MISSING'.. nada. The column is a varchar2(45) (oracle). Any ideas on where to look next?

You could maybe just use SET NODATA = ' '

Or else try:

DERIVED_F/A40 MISSING ON = IF DERIVED_FROM IS MISSING THEN ' ' ELSE DERIVED_FROM;
