What do you have to do when you need to add a 9 to a string with the edit function. Since 9 is already used for generic characters what would you do in this situation.

I'd concatenate the '9' to the string.

DEFINE FILE CAR
TEST/A10 = EDIT(COUNTRY,'999') | '9' | EDIT(COUNTRY,'$$$9999');
END
TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT TEST
BY COUNTRY
END

If you have to add more than one '9' to the string, use any special character instead (for instance #) and use the CTRAN to change all the #'s into 9's.

DEFINE FILE CAR
C#/A20=EDIT(COUNTRY,'9#9#9#9#9#9#9#9#9#9#');
C9/A20=CTRAN(20,C#, 35, 57, 'A20');
END
TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT C# C9
BY COUNTRY
END
