SET HOLDFORMAT=BINARY
MATCH FILE CAR SUM SEATS BY COUNTRY
RUN
FILE CAR SUM LENGTH WIDTH BY COUNTRY BY CAR ON TABLE HOLD
END
DOS TYPE HOLD.MAS
SET HOLDFORMAT=ALPHA
MATCH FILE CAR SUM SEATS BY COUNTRY
RUN
FILE CAR SUM LENGTH WIDTH BY COUNTRY BY CAR ON TABLE HOLD
END
DOS TYPE HOLD.MAS
But FORMAT ALPHA has a major downside: Numeric fields get stored according to "size" of their Usage, and that can lead to data overflow, causing the record to contain asterisks. (It was a constant consideration under PC/Focus, which did not use Binary) That will not happen with Binary.
Use Alpha where required, then set it back to Binary.

And there is one more thing to be careful about when using alpha. It's a trap I fall into myself now and again. It's when you have CDN set to ON. All the comma's and dots of the D-fields get switched and then transporting it to some other system might screw up the upload process.

Full disclosure --- This one was total serendipity --- I thought to myself, if it takes an NFR, might as well allow a free-standaing SET command. I dreamed up
SET HOLDFORMAT (natch) = ALPHA | INTERNAL | DEFAULT (to reset to the platform's default) | maybe others like Focus?
On a hunch (I know how much I don't know, so why put foot in mouth) I searched for HOLDFORMAT and found what I quoted earlier. There you go.
(They didn't include a reset, and my INTERNAL is their BINARY. Who's the committee that decides these spec details, before it goes to programming?)
