First time poster, long time lurker, somewhere between a novice and intermediate user. Thanks for all the tips!

I have a regular need to display values in scientific notation (i.e. 3.14E+00 to represent 3.14159...). WebFOCUS wants to "move" the decimal point one space to the left and place a leading zero in the value (i.e. 0.314E-01 to represent 3.14159...).

Is there a format specification or some type of "override" that will allow me to display these values in the commonly accepted manner?

Jim, sorry, I've never had to use scientific notation, but as this site (http://www.nyu.edu/pages/mathmol/textbook/scinot.html) clearly states,

The first number 1.23 is called the coefficient. It must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10.

The second number is called the base . It must always be 10 in scientific notation.

Exponents are often expressed using other notations. The number 123,000,000,000 can also be written as:

1.23E+11 or as 1.23 X 10^11

There's got to be a reason why WebFOCUS does not follow these scientific notation rules.

Perhaps a Scientist will answer.

Susannah, don't tell me that not a single other client of IBI has tried using scientific notation and found it does not display correctly? Would an NFR been requested years ago?

Check the support site. I do remember seeing this out there at one time. I think the function was EXPN.

The EXPN function "undoes" scientific notation.
