A lot of our initial reporting is done with TABLEF since the data coming in is already sorted but it appears that you cannot use style files with TABLEF - is this by design and what is the reasoning there?

(FOC3299) BORDER styling requires the TABLE command. Change TABLEF to TABLE

JD,
You can use style with TABLEF:

-* File TablefStyle.fex
TABLEF FILE CAR
SUM
     SALES
BY BODY
HEADING
""
FOOTING
""
ON TABLE SET PAGE-NUM OFF
ON TABLE NOTOTAL
ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT HTML
ON TABLE SET HTMLCSS ON
ON TABLE SET STYLE *
     UNITS=IN,
     SQUEEZE=ON,
     ORIENTATION=PORTRAIT,
$
     DEFMACRO=COND0001,
     MACTYPE=RULE,
     WHEN=N2 GT 20000,
$
TYPE=REPORT,
     GRID=OFF,
     FONT='ARIAL',
     SIZE=9,
$
TYPE=DATA,
     COLUMN=N1,
     SIZE=12,
     COLOR='BLUE',
$
TYPE=DATA,
     COLUMN=N2,
     COLOR='RED',
     MACRO=COND0001,
$
TYPE=TITLE,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=TITLE,
     COLUMN=N1,
     SIZE=12,
     COLOR='BLUE',
$
TYPE=TABHEADING,
     SIZE=12,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=TABFOOTING,
     SIZE=12,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=HEADING,
     SIZE=12,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=FOOTING,
     SIZE=12,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=SUBHEAD,
     SIZE=10,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=SUBFOOT,
     SIZE=10,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=SUBTOTAL,
     BACKCOLOR=RGB(210 210 210),
$
TYPE=ACROSSVALUE,
     SIZE=9,
$
TYPE=ACROSSTITLE,
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
TYPE=GRANDTOTAL,
     BACKCOLOR=RGB(210 210 210),
     STYLE=BOLD,
$
ENDSTYLE
END

Remember the TABLEF does not sort!

For performance reasons, I didn't want the data sorted by WebFOCUS since it is already sorted from the data source. I'm not sure that was an exact answer since I could do my own styling in the fex but when I tried to apply a standard style file (like ProBlue.sty for example) in Report Painter and then ran the procedure, I get "(FOC3299) BORDER styling requires the TABLE command. Change TABLEF to TABLE". It does work with TABLE but defeats my purpose.

JD,
For another of those unexplained reasons, WF does not like BORDER and TABLEF. Go figure out why! If you don't mind, use GRID instead. If you do mind, you are back to TABLE.

Here is the official word and explanation from IBI...

That is correct and current behavior in WebFOCUS. The use of the Style - BORDER feature require the usage of TABLE. It generates
an in memory area -- Internal Matrix
TABLEF does not create the same matrix.

There are two things that are potential follow-ups to this issue.

1. The documentation clarly needs to state this limitation.
2. You could submit as a New Fatture Request, for review by Programmming.

There is no work-around to this issue.

If you don't mind an intermediary HOLD file, I'd do the TABLEF, HOLD the output then do the TABLE with styling on the HOLD file. This may add a bit of overhead, depending on the size of the HOLD file.
